Together, they raised about $2,200 - maybe more (the final counts aren't up on the web site). The event is fully sponsored so that means that all the funds raised by our team will go to help at least 2 Vancouver Island families with living expenses. Those funds will allow the families to focus on their child during cancer treatment.
Readers of this blog will know that our family required more than that to keep us going over the 5.5 years of Rene's treatment! So we all know how necessary financial aid to parents of paediatric oncology patients is.
Here's a big shout out to this year's team, Spin-sational: Rebecca, Sue, Jeanine, Lin, June, and Carol (and families, of course)!
Additionally, another friend of mine, Jessica, formed a team with her own friends and raised $1,500 (or more - totals not up on the web site yet).
AND, Tuula, who works at SOMA Active Health in Fernwood brought a team of SOMA employees to the event and they raised $1,300 ish. You may remember Tuula because she donated a 1 hour massage gift certificate as a prize when Luis did his big fundraiser to Team 4 Hope about a year ago.
If you want to form your own team next year, please let me know. The event is fun and because you have a team of 6 people, the fundraising doesn't have to be terribly intense.
Susan Kerr, the island oncology liaison person who organizes the event and keeps the support to island families flowing, did a great job of remembering Rene at the Inside Ride. He always loved the event and added so much joy, fun, and enthusiasm to it. Luis and I felt very loved and supported as we enjoyed the event without Rene.
Below is a picture of Rene at the 2013 Inside Ride with his friend Angus and the Paedatric Oncology team he loved so much.
